Caduceus

Caduceus is a planned project for a reading device, similar to an Amazon Kindle, although liberated from Amazon’s ecosystem.

Motivation

Growing up, I loved reading books, both fictional and not. Recently, I’ve realised how much I’ve neglected my books. I have developed the belief that if I had an on-demand method of reading anything I wanted, I would likely read more than I currently do.

Reserach

My reading needs contain both books and manga (maybe some manuals?). Given this I’ll need colour. Sustainability is also an important requirement as well as repairability. Given this, the Kobo Clara Colour was selected as the target hardware. It uses an e-ink display with plenty of storage space for literature.

Kobo has partnered with iFixit to provide repair support and parts. Perhaps, given the spare finances, spare parts could be stocked in the event the company no longer produces parts. 85% of the exterior chassis is made with recycled plastic, 10% of which from ocean-bound plastic (or so they say).

Further work

This project will resume once I’ve located hardware for it. I’m aiming to purchase second hand, ideally from my local area.
